Advanced Crafts Creates Beautiful Jewelry! Highlights May 2009
Thanks to the local community, the Lake Forest High School Art Department now has the equipment to create metal objects through lost wax casting. The Advanced Crafts class was the first to utilize this equipment and they created rings. The general process involves students making a wax model of the ring they would like to produce and encasing it in a fine plaster material called investment. Then, the wax is burned out of the mold, creating a cavity in the investment. Finally, the centrifugal casting machine is used to insert molten metal into the mold. Students then refine the surface of the metal. The result is a highly polished sterling silver ring!
