LFHS Drawing, Painting and A/P Art Students recently visited Chicago where they toured Millennium Park sculptures with curator Lucas Anthony Cowan.
Mr. Cowan informed the students about how public art is chosen, funded, shipped internationally and installed. The students were able to go onstage in the Pritzker Pavilion,
explore the BP Bridge, and learn how famed architect Frank Gehry was awarded the commission for both of these by Mayor Richard J. Daley. Students also learned how Cloud
Gate ("The Bean") was manufactured, assembled and polished (it took a team of people working 14 hour days almost 2 years to polish the 25 MILES of seams in the stainless steel structure!). Other highlights of the field trip include viewing photography and mural exhibits at the Chicago Cultural Center and touring galleries in Chicago's River
North Gallery District.
