LFHS Crafts and Design Students Play with Fire, October 2010

“It was great! I got to play with fire!”  Said Eibhlin Faller, a talented student from one of the Crafts and Design Classes at Lake Forest High School.  On Tuesday, October 19 and Wednesday, October 20, 2010 Approximately 40 students from Lake Forest High School’s Crafts and Design and Ceramics classes ventured to Peter Patterson Glassworks in Mundelein.   Accompanied by teachers Wendy Antrim and Melissa Doucette, they were filled with excitement.  Upon arrival, they were greeted by a warm blast of heat.  Sue, the studio manager an artist, then explained that the warmth was radiated from three furnaces, which sustain molten glass at temperatures over 2100 degrees 24 hours per day.  They were treated to a glass blowing demonstration.  This was followed by another demonstration to show how each student would then make his or her individual paperweight.   “It was an extremely memorable experience.” said Jennifer Kreb.   “It was really hot!” said Cat Perino.  Other students agreed it was really cool and interesting to make the glass paperweight.  All agreed it was a new experience.  Maggie Kennelly said, “That was the best field trip ever.  Seriously!”
