LFHS Students Study Art in Chicago, May/June 2012

On Thursday, April 12, students from Drawing, Advanced Drawing, and AP Studio Art took a field trip to Chicago’s Millennium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center, and the River North Gallery District.  Curator of the Millennium Park Sculpture Garden Lucas Cowan taught the students about the impact of public art on tourism and culture, and gave the students many interesting facts about the concept and creation of Millennium Park.  Students were granted access to the choir loft at Pritzker Pavilion and were taken to the “Morbid Curiosity” show at the Cultural Center, which Cowan himself curated.  While at the Galleries in River North, students had the opportunity to visit galleries and speak with gallery owners about the artists they represent and the unusual materials they use.  The students all came away from the day with ideas for new methods they can use in their own art and a better understanding of careers that exist in the arts.
