Highlights, May 2009
April was Genocide
Prevention month and one freshman English class learned a lesson
in how a few can make a difference. Inspired by Maus, Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel about the
Holocaust, student Colin Seikel suggested a fundraiser to help
end genocide. From there, Ms. Lyons’s class entered the Dollars
for Darfur campaign after researching the history of genocide in
Darfur, Sudan since 2003 that has taken an estimated 400,000 lives.
Students volunteered ideas and individual talents to put together
a wristband and raffle sale that raised $700 to be donated to both
Save Darfur Coalition and Solar Cooker Project. Students Sammy
Dolgin, Katie Hall, and Colin Seikel performed a song written about
Darfur among others at the “Jam for Darfur” Wednesday
April 8 before students, after showing an informational video about
what is happening in Darfur. Others collected a total of 125 postcard
petitions that will be delivered to President Obama at a rally
in D.C. as part of this nationwide high school campaign. Whether
it was people skills or artistic, technical, or musical talent,
students demonstrated that it only requires a willingness to make
a contribution and have their voices be heard. Thanks to Mr. Zielinski
for donating the gum raffle awards and to Chris Charhut and Mr.
David Miller for running A/V support, and to students, staff and
parents for their show of support. Go to www.SaveDafur.org and
