March 2008 HIGHLIGHTS

Laissez les bons temps rouler!
Mardi Gras came early this year – le 5 février. To celebrate, Mme. Sperling’s classes feasted on the traditional Galette des Rois (King Cake) and French bread with Nutella (a hazelnut chocolate spread). Within each Galette des Rois is a hidden plastic baby. Tradition states that the person who finds the baby in his or her piece of cake becomes the king or queen for the day, has good luck all year, and has to supply the Galette des Rois the following year. The five kings/queens this year were: Andy Quinn, Kendall Wangman, Elise Terlato, Natalie Binns, and Emma O’Connor-Brooks. During class, the students wore authentic Mardi Gras masques and learned about the origin of this holiday as well as how it is celebrated today around the world.
