The LFHS B & B
(books and breakfast) April
2008 Highlights
The library book club, LFHS B & B,
hosted two successful book discussions on
Jodi Picoult’s best selling novel “19 Minutes.”
The
major plotline of this novel surrounds a shocking school shooting at
a New England high school that devastates the
community as they mourn
the 10 victims and try to understand the motivation of the killer. Picoult
was inspired to write this
book after the Columbine Massacre of 2001
as she tried to understand not just the effects of the shootings, but
more
importantly the causes. This narrative beautifully explores all
the factors that led to the protagonist’s decision to aggressively
address his pain. We had over 30 students participate in the discussions,
25 of whom attended the Jodi Picoult book event
at the Gorton Community
Center on March 12. Students heard the author read an excerpt from her
new novel “Change of Heart”
and address numerous questions
about her books and the writing process. Students even had the opportunity
to personally
meet Picoult and have their books signed.
