LFHS students
in Kelly McKee’s and Steve
Dunn’s Contemporary Issues classes had studied that
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden was making visits to Chile
and Costa Rica to improve relations between the U.S. and
our Latin American neighbors during LFHS spring break. They
also knew that President Oscar Arias (whose trademark legislation,
the Central American Free-Trade Agreement (CAFTA) with the
U.S) was once adamantly opposed by V.P. Biden in the halls
of the U.S. Senate! LFHS students did not know, however,
that he would be staying in their same hotel in Costa Rica
during spring break. The students talked with the Secret
Service staff (250 of them traveled with the VP for this
trip) and asked if they could meet with V.P. Joe Biden. Clearance
was granted for LFHS students when he was on his way to meet
with Belize Prime Minister, Dean Barrow, Panamanian President
Martin Torrijos, Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom, Savadoran
President Antonio Saca, Honduran Vice President Aristides
Mejia, Nicaraguan Vice Foreign Minister Manuel Coronel, and
Costa Rican President Oscar Arias. When V.P. Joe Biden spoke
with the students, he was very friendly and excited to hear
that they were from Chicago. Needless to say, the students
were inspired by their studies at LFHS. They used this opportunity
to inspire the Vice President who promised to bridge better
relations with our Latin American partners!
The Vice President
concluded by saying, “S-C-O...U-T-S...
Go Scouts Go!” |
