Student Expression and Participation

Opportunities will be provided students to acquire knowledge, to develop talents, and to
understand and participate in the society of which they are a part. Students will be encouraged to participate in school activities as an extension of the educational process.
To provide for student interests and potentials for learning, they will be encouraged to participate in the implementation of planned educational programs.  Students will have the responsibility to assist in planning and implementing student activities and to provide for a variety of recreational, social, and governmental experiences.  As preparation for students to become responsible citizens, an important goal of the High School is to develop in students a basic awareness and an understanding and acceptance of the individual responsibilities and privileges inherent in the democratic way of life. The school community will strive to provide a proper balance between necessary order and individual freedom to protect the rights of all students.  Since this is one of the more complex issues facing contemporary society, the Board of Education considers it essential to provide guidelines to help promote individual freedom, responsibility, good citizenship, and to maintain an orderly process of education.  Students attending the Lake Forest High School have the right to express opinions, take stands or support causes. They also have the responsibility to respect the rights of other students to silence and privacy. The rights of student expression within the school or on its premises are limited as hereinafter provided.
