GRADUATED LICENSE LAW
NEW LAW ---- JANUARY 1998

Teenagers represent only 6 percent of all Illinois drivers, unfortunelythey account for 16 percent of all crash fatalities. These troubling statisticsled to the creation of a graduated driver licensing system in Illinois called"Graduate To Safety." The "Graduate To Safety ," lawis aimed at reducing the death rate among the state's youngest and statisticallymost dangerous drivers into remedial programs and involving more parentsin preparing teens to be safe drivers.

PERMIT PHASE -- DRIVERS AGE 15*Parent consent necessary to obtain permit*Student must complete approved driver education course and must passvision and knowledge tests*Permit must be held for a minimum of three months and is valid for uptwo years* Practice driving must be supervised by parent or adult age 21 or older*Number of passengers limited to one in the fromt seat and to the numberof sea belts in the back seat*11 p.m. curfew Sunday-Thursday; midnight Friday and Saturday (localcurfews may differ)* Legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit is .00
