Lake Forest 34 Mundelein 0
The Scouts dominated the Mundelein Mustangs in the first
quarter, setting the tone for a resounding Scouts' victory. During
the first possession Scott Powell caused Mundelein to fumble,
and Cole Moore promptly recovered the ball. Powell followed with
an 11-yard run and a TD pass. Baylor Broughton made good on the
PAT. Scouts 7 Mustangs 0--only 2 minutes into the quarter. On
the next Mundelein possession, Chris Wilson recovered a fumble
on the Mustangs 14 yard line. Andrew Clifford completed a screen
pass to Wilson for another Scouts TD. Broughton made the PAT. Scouts
14 Mustangs 0.
In the second quarter, a relentless Scouts defense forced the
Mustangs to turn over the ball on downs on the Scouts' 9-yard
line. A 48-yard reception from Clifford to Andrew Freeman brought
the Scouts into the red zone. Powell completed the drive by powering
in for a TD. Broughton made the PAT. Scouts 21 Mustangs
0. Scouts closed out the half strong with a 42-yard
run by Powell for another TD and an interception by Tom Doherty. The
score was Scouts 28 Mustangs 0 at the half.
The Scouts continued strong in the second half with Powell returning
a kick off for another TD. A missed PAT resulted in a score of Scouts
34 Mustangs 0. The Scout defense continued to wreak
havoc on the Mustang offense with Powell recovering yet another
fumble, and John Baker sacking the quarterback--leaving the Mustangs
scoreless.

Lake Forest 14 - Warren 42
A Lake Forest squad, hampered by injuries, faced Warren
on their home turf during Homecoming. Warren came out strong
scoring a TD off an 80+ yard pass and made good on the PAT. Later
in the first quarter Warren returned a Lake Forest punt for a
TD and made the PAT, ending the quarter with a score of Warren
14 - Lake Forest 0. Warren went on to score three more TDs in
the second quarter closing out the half with a score of Warren
42 - Lake Forest 0.
The Scouts started the third quarter strong--recovering an onside
kick. A series of nice runs by Baylor Broughton and Scott Powell
brought the Scouts into the red zone. A reception by Andrew Freeman
brought the ball to the Warren 4 and set up a nice running TD
by Scott Powell. Lake Forest failed to convert the 2-point conversion,
making the score Warren 42 - Lake Forest 6. The Scouts drove
to the end zone again in the 4th quarter with a number of nice
runs by Chris Wilson and a TD pass to Alex Moore. The Scouts
completed the 2-pt conversion with a pass to Jack Troller. Final
Score Warren 42 - Lake Forest 14.

Lake Forest 0 - Stevenson 24
The Scouts faced a formidable Stevenson team. Patrick Wald recovered
a fumble on Stevenson’s first possession. With 1:27 remaining
in the 1st quarter Stevenson scored a TD and made the PAT. Stevenson
recovered a fumble on the Scouts' 9-yard line with 3:50 remaining
in the half, leading to their second TD and PAT. With 1:49 remaining,
Stevenson intercepted the ball on their 40. A strong defensive
stand resulted in a 3 and out. The half ended with the score
Stevenson 14 - Lake Forest 0.
Turnovers continued to plague the Scouts in the second half.
With 5 minutes left in the 3rd, Stevenson's drive to the end
zone was halted when Cole Moore and Alex Woloshyn brought down
the runner on 3rd and goal. Stevenson was forced to settle for
a field goal--making the score Stevenson 17 - Lake Forest 0.
Another TD and PAT in the 4th closed out play with a final score
of Stevenson 24 - Lake Forest 0.

Lake Forest12 - Libertyville 20
Despite two sacks by Scott Powell, Libertyville scored
a TD in the 1st quarter and missed the PAT resulting in a score
of 6-0. The Scouts opened the 2nd quarter with a strong defensive
stand that put an end to another Libertyville drive with 9:53
remaining. Libertyville went on to score two more TDs, converting
only one of the two 2-point conversion attempts to end the half
with a score of 20-0. John Baker sacked the quarterback with
13 seconds remaining stopping a final Libertyville drive to the
end zone before the half.
The Scouts came on strong in the 3rd quarter. With 6:02 remaining,
a poorly snapped punt gave the Scouts the ball on Libertyville's
29-yard line. On the next play, Andrew Clifford completed a TD
pass to Nick Giordano making the score 20-6. The Scouts missed
the PAT. Sacks by Tom Kutschke and Scott Powell restrained the
Libertyville offense and an interception by Peter Passalino with
3:20 remaining closed out the 3rd with a score of 20-6. With
9:15 left in the 4th quarter, Clifford converted a 3rd-and-inches
keeper for a first down. Clifford followed the play with a 20-yard
reception to Baylor Broughton. Passalino completed the drive
with a 40-yard run for a TD--making the score 20-12. Scouts missed
the PAT. With 5:45 remaining in the 4th, Libertyville failed
to convert on 4th down and inches when Kutschke stuffed the run.
The Scouts defense continued strong with sacks by Baker and Powell.
With under a minute remaining, the Scouts drove 87 yards with
two passes to Broughton and one to Giordano. Unfortunately the
clock ran out with the Scouts within 5 yards of the end zone.
Final score Libertyville 20 - Scouts 12.

Lake Forest 6 - Zion Benton 0
The Sophomore Lake Forest Scouts headed north to take on the Zion Benton Zee
Bees in their final showdown of the 2009 season. The Scouts went into the
game at 4-4, needing a victory to secure a winning record, but Zion was determined
to not let that happen. The game was going to be a contest of will as the
footing on the field was poor, the wind blustering, and the rain was coming down
horizontally, limiting visibility. Whichever team wanted it more was going
to come away with the win.
The Scout defense took the field first and gave some ground at first, but as
usual, inside the 15 yard line, forced a Zee Bee turnover on downs to give the
ball back to the mighty Scout offense. Unfortunately, the Lake Forest game
plan needed to be scrapped when the field and weather conditions dictated that
throwing the ball was all but out of the question. It was going to be up
to the powerful Scout offensive linemen Alex Watkins, Brandon Moccia, Tyler Funk,
Grant Dethlefson, and Danny McGavock clearing running lanes for quarterback Jordan
Beck and running backs Cole Bevis and Brad Stambolic. But the Scouts had
to punt the ball away on their first possession and the opening salvos of the
game had been fired on both sides. The first half went quickly as the Scout
defensive line of Funk, Dethlefson, Jason Handler, Brad Miller, Matt Wagener,
JP Duranleau, and Sean Harris stymied the running game of the home team and shut
them out in the first two quarters. The Scout receivers Luke Bernardi,
Cam Douglass, John Marwede, and Riley Scholer blocked fearlessly in the first
half along with tight ends Jack Wright, George Stamelos, and Handler. But
neither could Lake Forest find their way into the end zone, leaving the game
scoreless at the intermission. The linebacking corps ruled the second half
as Brandt Pfeifer, Phil Sheridan, Miller McComish, and Stamelos punished the
failing Zion running game while Duke Durot, Sam Moran, Alex Athenson, Connor
Ford, Ben Warren, and Bevis limited the Zion air attack to virtually nothing.
Warren knocked down a key fourth-down pass late in the fourth quarter as he has
in his lockdown coverage all year. But the defensive highlight of the night
was provided by Bevis. As the Zion quarterback threw up a pass along the
numbers, Bevis swooped in from the safety position, stepped in front of the receiver,
picked off the pass, and returned the interception 34 yards. This particularly
fired up running back Connor Glynn, who was the first to congratulate Bevis.
With four minutes remaining the game and the score still knotted at zero, the
Zion offense took over and drove the ball down to the Scout 37 yard line. Here,
the Scouts called time out and regrouped. They dug into the mud and stopped
the Zee Bees on four consecutive plays to give Beck and co. one final chance
to drive 78 yards for the victory. But with only 1:23 left on the clock,
they would need a miracle.
Deciding they would find a way, Beck heaved a long pass down to the middle of
the field into the outstretched arms of a diving Bevis for the first Scouts first
down of the drive and bringing the Scouts into Zion territory. Running
the hurry up offense, the Scouts pushed the ball on the ground to the 19-yard
line. On 4th and 1 with 25 seconds left, three running backs and the offensive
line pushed Beck past the first marker and all the way down to the 12-yard line. A
corner route to Sheridan in the end zone was well defended and fell incomplete,
leaving the Scouts with 8 seconds left in their season. With everything
on the line, Beck dropped back to pass needing nothing short of a touchdown. He
looked to his left to draw the safety over and came back to Bevis down the middle
of the field. With darkness falling and the wind still howling, he launched
the mud-covered ball into the end zone. Here, he found one of his favorite
targets, Cole Bevis, sprinting behind his defender and slightly behind the ball. With
one last effort, he dove again and the ball fell softly into his outstretched
arms as he landed in the end zone and slid a good ten yards. The referees
fired their arms up into the air, signaling touchdown and giving the Scouts a
6-0 victory and a winning record on the season.

Lake Forest 15 - Lake Zurich 18
The Lake Forest Scouts fell to the Lake Zurich Bears in a game that will go down
as the one of the best of the sophomore North Suburban Lake Conference season. The
Scouts came in riding high after an emphatic 30-21 victory over the Grant sophs
last week. It was a beautiful, but brisk night in Lake Zurich and Lake
Forest wasted no time, as Cam Douglass returned the opening kickoff to around
midfield to give quarterback Jordan Beck and the Scouts offense great field position
to lead off the game. The Scouts couldn't find the scoreboard on their
first possession, and Lake Zurich began marching downfield after a solid Cole
Bevis punt, but the Bears found the Scout red zone defense staunch and unyielding. The
D tightened inside the 10 yard line as has been the story all year and held the
Bears to just a field goal on their first possession. The Scouts took the
ball back and immediately drove down in response to the Lake Zurich field goal. The
Scouts drive nearly stalled as they faced 4th and 6 at the Bears 40 yard line,
but a Beck completion to Riley Scholer kept the chains moving. Scholer
made the clutch catch in his first start of the season. A leaping 14-yard
catch by Douglass brought the Scouts within the 5-yard line, but the Bear defense
tightened up and stopped the three consecutive Beck sneak attempts and left the
Scouts with a tricky 18-yard field goal attempt from the far right hash. As
he has done all year, Sam Moran knocked the kick straight through the uprights
with authority, tying the game at 3-3. That would be the score as both
teams headed to their respective locker rooms at halftime.
The third quarter began as the sky faded to black and the blue helmets really
began to shine underneath the lights. With the Scouts facing 2nd and 12
around midfield, Beck connected with Phil Sheridan for a dramatic 15-yard catch
and run. Sheridan skillfully eluded a Lake Zurich defender to scamper past
the first-down marker. From here the Lake Forest offensive line took over,
lead by Tyler Funk and Brandon Moccia on the left side, Luke Landsell and Danny
McGavok on the right, and Alex Watkins snapping. They led running backs
Cole Bevis and Brad Stambolic down to the Bear 5-yard line. With a powerful
surge, the offensive line opened up a hole big enough for Bevis to power his
way into the end zone giving the Scouts a 9-3 advantage. Bevis and Stambolic
ran hard all night, with Stambolic bruising his way downhill and Bevis expertly
juking the Lake Zurich defenders. But the Bears were not going to go away
easily. They came back with a long, time-consuming drive that ended in
a touchdown and extra point, pushing ahead 10-9.
This only fired up the Scout offense, and they effortlessly moved the ball down
the field. Beck, Bevis, and Stambolic proved too much to handle on the
ground and Beck's connection down the seam to Sheridan brought the Scouts once
again to within striking distance of taking the lead. With under six minutes
remaining in the game, Beck found tight end George Stamelos in the end zone as
he has done so many times this season for the go-ahead score. A valiant
effort by Beck and Bevis on the two-point conversion failed, but the Scouts still
held a 15-10 advantage. Lake Zurich took the ball with 65 between them
and the end zone and just a few minutes remaining on the clock. A few key
offensive play calls moved the Bears inside the Scouts 10 yard line. The
Scouts D held tough on 1st and 2nd down, but the Lake Zurich runner squeaked
into the corner of the end zone, and with a two point conversion, took control
of the scoreboard at 18-15. The Scouts took the field with under a minute
remaining and 70 yards to go, but could not manage to push down the field. The
Scouts held their heads high after the epic battle, having played as a team for
40 minutes and leaving everything on the field. This appears to be the
start of an intense rivalry that will surely spill over into the varsity season
next year. The loss leaves the Scouts 4-4 on the season and 4-2 in conference. They
will go for a winning record in Zion Benton next Friday. The Scouts and
Zee Bees will kick off in the season finale at 5:00.

Lake Forest 30 - Grant 21
The Lake Forest Sophomores squared off against the Grant Bulldogs
in NSC Conference play Friday night. Both teams were jockeying
for position atop their respective divisions and a battle ensued. The
Scouts struck early with a red-zone touchdown pass to George Stamelos
from Jordan Beck, but it would not be the last time the two connected. The
defense had their chance and stood their ground on a crucial 4th and
short to start the second quarter, stopping a Grant rush in the backfield
and essentially setting the tone for the rest of the evening. Grant's
next possession did not fare much better as Phil Sheridan and Ben Warren
combined to force the ball loose from the Bulldog ball carrier and
Brad Miller pounced on the ball on the turf to give the ball back to
the mighty Scout offense. Wide receiver Luke Bernardi got in
on the action and converted a critical 3rd and 7 around midfield with
a leaping grab. The offense stalled out in the red zone so Sam
Moran was called in to effortlessly boot a 25-yard field goal near
the end of the first half. An unfortunate breakdown in special
teams sent both teams to the locker rooms with Grant leading 14-10.
The second half was all Lake Forest however.
Beck opened the second-half scoring with a short playaction pass to Stamelos
again, who broke three tackles and took it the distance with an impressive 33-yard
scoring catch and run. Stamelos proved too strong to tackle and too quick
to stop on the explosive play. Then it was the defense's turn again. Jason
Handler came up with a key 4th down sack of the Grant quarterback. That
was not all though as the pressure from the defensive line continued. The
Scouts were even sharp on their punt return team as they foiled a Grant fake-punt
attempt as Ben Warren knocked down a pass headed for a first down. Warren
is arguably the best cover corner in the league, and he proved it again against
Grant. From here the offensive line took over as Cole Bevis broke off an
electric run off tackle to set up another display of Beck's athleticism. After
the Bevis run left the Scouts knocking on Grant's door, Beck took off running
to the left and picked up lead blocker Brandon Moccia, who lead Beck in for a
26-yard touchdown run. The third quarter closed with the Scouts holding
a slim 23-21 advantage.
The Scouts turned the ball over early in the fourth, but the Bulldog's offense
was once again stifled on their opportunity to take back the lead. Inside
the Lake Forest 40 yard line, a Grant sneak attempt on 4th and inches was turned
away by tackles Grant Dethlefson and Tyler Funk and linebacker Brandt Pfiefer. Grant
had one last opportunity as Bevis set up to punt and boomed a kick 40 yards downfield
where the Grant returner muffed the catch, and Cam Douglass made the hustle play
of the evening and dove on the loose ball to turn the momentum in Lake Forest's
favor for good. The offensive line punctuated the victory by leading Beck
into the endzone on a QB sneak from the 1 yard line, making the final score 30-21.
The Scouts were proud to win on the Varsity Senior Night and look forward to
seeing you at their next game Friday night at Lake Zurich. it will be a
contest until the finish and will need a full team effort to keep their hopes
of a conference championship alive.
