1/14/12
Lake Forest 25 - Elk Grove 29
In non-conference play on Saturday, the Scouts battled hard against
Elk Grove. In
the first quarter, the Grens jumped out to a 10-point lead by their hot outside
shooting against our zone defense. After switching to aggressive man to
man defense, the Scouts pressured the Grens to commit several turnovers and cut
into their lead. The Scouts were in full attack mode on offense, and got
to the foul line 27 times! Unfortunately, the Scouts made only 8 foul shots
and lost to the Grens by a score of 29-25. McKenna Shea led all scorers
with 12 points, while Taylor Green’s smothering defense against their point
guard helped keep the Grens’ offense in check. The Scouts resume
conference play Tuesday, Jan. 17, against Zion Benton.

The Frosh are 10-5 overall and 2-3 in conference.

Lake Forest 37 - Stevenson 35
The Frosh bounced back by edging Stevenson
37-35 on Tuesday night in yet another exciting fight to the finish. The
Scouts improved their record to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in conference
play. The
Scouts jumped out to an early lead behind the high energy of our
swarming defense and the hot shooting of Maddie Gailey. The
Scouts had a 19-10 half time lead with Gailey accounting for 12 of
those points. The second half saw the Patriots roaring back
by their full court pressure, and they narrowed the gap to 28-25
by the end of the third quarter. Jesse Bernhart helped
keep the game close by scoring three straight baskets in that quarter. The
lead see-sawed several times in the final moments when Katie Hanson
hit two big shots, and critical free throws were made by Gailey and
McKenna Shea. Credit should also be given to the quick defense
of Taylor Green, Emma Allen, and Deanna Stephenson. The
Scouts host Libertyville on Thursday night, December 15.
12/10/11
Lake Forest 15 - Warren 30
The Frosh were dealt their first conference loss by the Warren Blue
Devils (30-15) in their first home game of the season. The
Scouts had played their first nine games on the road, and their fourth
away game in five days. The Blue Devils thus avenged their
previous defeat against the Scouts in the Waukegan Tournament. The
Scouts started slow defensively, and gave up the first four baskets. A
spurt of energy in the second half, allowed the Scouts to cut the
lead to seven points. But fatigue was a factor and the
Scouts could not sustain the comeback. The Scouts (9-2, 2-1)
host Stevenson in their first conference match-up on Tuesday, December
13.
12/8/11--Scouts Place First at Grant Tournament
Lake Forest (9-1, 2-0) 32 - Grant 20
In the championship game of the Grant
tournament on Thursday, the Scouts defeated Grant 32-20 and added
their second 1st place trophy of the young
season. It was a total team victory! After
a slim 14-12 first-half lead, the Scouts turned up the defensive
heat and held Grant to just 2 points in the third quarter. Taylor
Green led the defensive effort by forcing Grant’s point guard
into traps. Maddie Gailey topped all scorers with 12 points,
and Emma Allen dealt the final blow by scoring three layups in the
final quarter. The Scouts finally got control of the
boards late in the second half and ran a delay offense to seal the
victory. The Scouts improved their overall season record to
9-1.
They bring their 2-0 conference record home after a long
road trip to face the Warren Blue Devils Friday night, December 9, in
a rematch from the Waukegan tournament. In that contest,
the Scouts edged the Blue Devils by 2 points in an exciting finish,
and later went on to win that tournament.
12/6/11
Lake Forest (8-1) 33 - Zion Benton 26
The Scouts travelled
to Zion Benton for a rematch with the Zee Bees in conference play
on Tuesday. After a slow start in the first
half, the Scouts turned up the heat on the Zee Bees and posted another
win--to improve their record to 8-1. The Scouts pressed
the Zee Bees and shut down the drives into the lane by the quick
guards of Zion Benton. The offense used better shot selection
and took control of the game in the second half. Scoring was
very balanced and the Scouts finally got control of the boards. The
Scouts are 2-0 in conference and will face off against Grant in the
championship game of the Grant tournament on Thursday, December 8
12/05/11
Lake Forest 26 - Zion Benton 20
The Scouts bounced back from
a defeat on Saturday and beat Zion Benton 26-20 Monday night in the
Grant Tournament. The
Scouts are 2-0 in the tournament and will face off against Grant
in the championship game on Thursday, December 8. The
Scouts established an early lead with pestering man-to-man defense,
and the Zee Bees never mounted a serious threat. Maddie Gailey
led all scorers with 15 points, and reserves Deanna Stephenson, Sarah
Dellaire, and Michaela Marshall saw significant action. The
Scouts (7-1) travel to Zion Benton tonight (Tuesday, December 6)
to play the Zee Bees in conference action.
12/03/11
Lake Forest (A) (6-1) 43 - Highland Park 45
It took a buzzer beater by the sharpshooting Highland Park Giants
to deal the Frosh A team their first defeat of the season (43-45). In
a very exciting game, the Scouts and Giants exchanged the lead several
times during the game. In the end, it was the outside shooting
of the Giants and several Scout turnovers that were the difference
in the game. Maddie Gailey led all scorers with 16 points,
and Jesse Bernhart added 10. The full court man-to-man pressure
of the Scouts helped turn the tide back in our favor. The Scouts
held on to a one-point lead in the final moments. However,
with 1 second remaining on the game clock, a Giant guard launched
a desperation 3 pointer. It would be her third three in a row
and the fatal blow for the stunned Scouts. The Scouts (6-1)
resume play in the Grant Tournament Monday night against conference
rivals Zion Benton.
In the “fifth quarter” Frosh B
game, the Scouts outscored the Giants 8-3.
12/1/11
Lake Forest (A) 29 - Mundelein 27
The Frosh A team has a new name--the Come-back Kids. After trailing
Mundelein by 10 points for most of the game, the Scouts staged a
4th-quarter rally to outscore the Mustangs (19-7) and win the conference
opener 29-27. The team's energy in the first quarter was low, having
survived a nail-biter against Wauconda the night before. The Scouts
initially had difficulty with the Mustangs’ full court pressure;
however, the Mustangs got a taste of their own medicine as LF
scrapped, trapped, and forced them to commit critical turnovers.
The Scouts 4th quarter attack was led by Maddie Gailey (11 points),
McKenna Shea (6 points), and Emma Allen (4 points). Katie Hanson
hit two crucial free throws, and Taylor Green and Jesse Bernhart
sparked the defense and helped the Scouts hold off the Mustangs’ last-minute
surge. The Frosh A take their 6-0 record to Highland
Park on Saturday, December 3.
The Frosh B beat Mundelein 23-5 behind the pestering
defense of Deanna Stephenson and Andrea Baumgartel. Showing her speed
and agility, Deanna streaked down the court past Mustang defenders,
and shot layup after layup to score a game-high 12 points. Way to
go Scouts!
11/30/11--First Game of Grant Tournament
Lake Forest 23 - Wauconda 22
The Freshman Girls continued on their winning ways by edging
Wauconda 23-22 in the opening round of the Grant Tournament. The Scouts
struggled to get the offense going and committed critical turnovers
in the third quarter. This allowed Wauconda to take the lead for the
first time in the game. Key baskets by Jesse Bernhart and Taylor Green
in the closing moments of the game helped the Scouts regain the lead.
The Scouts' defense held up to seal this rather ugly win.
Jesse Bernhart
scored a season-high 6 points, Emma Allen chipped in with 5 points,
while Maddy Gailey, Katie Hanson, and Taylor Green rounded the scoring
with 4 points apiece. The Frosh are 5-0 and will
take on Mundelein on Thursday, December 1, in their conference opener.
11/18-19/11
It was a very exciting weekend for the 4-0 Freshmen Girls' Basketball
team. The Scouts won three straight games to win the Waukegan Tournament.
According to Coach Long, the team made LFHS history by being the
first Freshmen team to bring home the championship trophy.
In the opening game Friday night
against a very athletic and physical Evanston team, the Scouts took
at early halftime lead 13-5. Outscored by the Wildkits 10-2 in the
third quarter, the Scouts
regained their composure to edge Evanston 22-21. Clutch
free throws by Katie Hanson,a three point play by Maddie Gailey who
aggressively drove the lane, and a key basket by McKenna Shea sealed
the victory. Defensive standout, Jesse Bernhart, controlled the paint
and helped shut down Evanston's inside game, while Taylor Green pestered
the Wildkit guards into committing several turnovers that were converted
into layups by the Scouts.
Scoring was very balanced: McKenna Shea
(7 points), Taylor Green (6 points), Maddie Gailey (5 points), and
Katie Hanson (4 points).
Advancing to the Championship bracket on
Saturday, the Scouts defeated conference rivals Warren 23-21 in
another very intense and physical game. The Scouts jumped
out to 12-9 half-time lead by switching defenses and forcing the
Blue Devils to commit critical turnovers. The Scouts continued
to win the battle of the boards with Maddie Gailey grabbing 13
rebounds, Jesse Bernhart 6, and Katie Hanson 5.
In the second half,
the Scouts went into delay offense and forced the Blue Devils
to foul them. Key buckets by Taylor Green and Katie Hanson, a driving
layup by McKenna Shea, and a steal and length of the court slash
to the basket by Gailey helped seal the victory. Credit should be
given to our outstanding team defense against the larger Blue Devils.
This game sent a strong message to Warren, that this year the Scouts
mean business!
The Championship Game against Waukegan was
a total team victory 46-24. The Scouts jumped out to an
early lead and never looked back. Maddie Gailey had a game high
24 points, and the remaining scoring was shared by Katie Hanson
and McKenna Shea with 6 points apiece, and Jesse Bernhart and Andrea
Baumgartel with 4 points apiece. Reserves Michaela Marshall and
Sarah Dallaire saw significant action, worked hard on defense,
and grabbed several rebounds. It was especially fun for the team
to play the title game in the historic Waukegan “Dog Pound” gym
11/15/11
Lake Forest Frosh A 28 - Regina 17
Lake Forest Frosh B 16 - Regina 33
The Frosh Girls BB team got off to a great start against
Regina tonight. All the girls gave a tremendous effort.
The A
team beat Regina 28-17 behind the hustling defense and quickness
of Maddie Gailey and Emma Allen. They combined for 14 steals!
The additional swarming defense of Taylor Green, Jesse Bernhart,
McKenna Shea, and Katie Hansen held Regina to only 2 points
in the first half and forced Regina to commit over 20 turnovers.
Maddie and Jesse did a super job controlling the boards at both ends. McKenna
led all scorers with 9 points while other players balanced the rest
of the scoring.
The B team put forth a great effort too. Behind
the leadership and hustle of Jacqueline Becker, the team scrapped
through the entire game. While Regina won 33-16, the team never
gave up even a single moment. The taller Regina team had more offensive
rebounds and put-backs, which accounted for most of their points. Deanna
Stephenson showed the crowd her speed, Sara Dallaire her intensity,
Michaela Marshall her athleticism, and Farah Hashim set some mean
picks on the opponents. Jacqueline led all scorers with 7 points
and had over 10 steals/recoveries. In both games we played
hard, smart, and together. Way to go Frosh!
