1/7/12
Lake Forest 27 - Wauconda 21
The Scouts (8 – 7) were back to their old ways today against Wauconda.  Defense set the stage even when the offense didn’t have it going on.  Maddie Wells played her best game of the season.  Three clutch offensive rebounds helped seal the deal.  Kate Arnson contributed 7 points and 5 rebounds in the effort.  Grace Torkelson snagged 10 rebounds and played great defense--forcing Wauconda to turn the ball over many times.

Coach Kleeman feels they still need to concentrate more on free-throws as the team shot 21% (3/14).  They did a great job of getting to the line, but did not capitalize on the opportunities.  The Scouts take a little break due to finals and return to action next Saturday at home vs. Elk Grove.

Stats: Manning – 2 pts, 3 reb;  Torkelson – 5 pts, 10 reb, 1 steal, 1 assist;  Farrell – 1 reb, 1 steal; Wells – 11 pts, 5 reb, 1 steal; Green – 2 pts, 1 reb, 2 steals; Arnson – 7 pts, 5 reb, 1 steal.

1/5/12
Lake Forest 28 - Lake Zurich 35
The Scouts should have won this one.  Even though they were trailing most, if not all, of the game LF cut Lake Zurich’s lead to 1 point with 2-minutes remaining.  The Scouts missed 3 of the 7 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter while LZ made 5 of 6 to help seal the game.  They worked a little bit of the winter-break rust off tonight and once the girls got back up to game speed it was a good competition.  Brooke Green picked up where she left off by scoring 10 points and 3 rebounds.  The sophomores play Saturday at home vs. Wauconda.

Stats: Manning – 6 pts, 1 reb;  Torkelson – 4 pts, 5 reb;  Farrell – 1 pt; Feldhaus – 1 reb; Wells – 4 pts, 6 rebounds; Green – 10 pts, 3 reb; Arnson – 3 pts, 2 reb

12/15/11
Lake Forest 19 vs. Libertyville 36

The mid-season break arrived a game too late.  The grind of 8 games over 13 nights finally caught up with everyone and energy was hard to come by.  Maddie Wells was the lone bright spot with 9 points and 9 rebounds.  The Patriots held the Scouts to single digits in every quarter, including only 2 points in the first and 4 points in the third.  It's going to be difficult to win many games with that kind of offensive outing.  The Scouts will come back re-energized and rejuvenated to finish the second half strong.  The Scouts carry a 7 – 6 record into the break.

Stats:  Manning – 2 points; Torkelson – 2 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists, 1 blocks; Wells – 9 points, 9 rebounds; Green – 2 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals; Arnson – 4 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block; Feldhaus – 1 rebound; Kovacevic – 2 steals

12/13/11
Lake Forest 31 - Stevenson 39

Another slow start put the Scouts in a 13- 6 first-quarter deficit and eventual 26 – 11 first-half hole.  Stevenson's pesky defense gave LF fits when trying to make entry passes into their offense.  The Patriots' pressure, both on-the-ball and off, forced turnover after turnover which seemed to be easily converted into points on the other end.   The Scouts got close at the end, but once again waited too long to turn on the urgency. Freshman Grace Torkelson turned in a great performance with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Stats:  Manning – 6 points; Torkelson – 10 points, 12 rebounds, 1 blocks; Wells – 2 points, 2 rebounds; Green – 9 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block; Arnson – 2 points, 4 rebounds; Feldhaus – 2 points

12/09/11
Lake Forest 34 - Warren 40

Even a 16-pt fourth quarter couldn’t quite get the Scouts past the Blue-Devils of Warren.  Making only 4 of 11 free-throws didn’t help our cause either.  Lake Forest just waited too long before they turned on our energy, but when they did, it made a huge difference.    The girls did a great job especially considering they just played 4 games in 5 nights. The Scouts look to rebound against Stevenson on Tuesday.

Stats:  Manning – 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists; Torkelson – 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks; Wells – 5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block; Green – 7 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals; Arnson – 10 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 blocks

Grant Tournament--Game 3
Lake Forest 32 - Grant  31
The girls pulled-off a fantastic comeback victory and snagged the “w” right out from under the Bulldogs of Grant.  The Scouts came out of the gates with a bit of swagger--finally ready to play a game from the start.  LF won the tip and got on the board first.  A couple minutes later Megan Manning hit a three pointer.  We have not lost a game when she hits at least one three pointer in the game.

The Scouts took what looked like a comfortable 17 – 10 halftime lead; however, the Bulldogs surprised us with a full-court press to start the third quarter and took immediate control of the game while rushing out for a 13 – 6 run.  It was back and forth from there for the entire 4th.  Maddie Wells scored 5 clutch points--including a 17 footer from the top of the key.  Grace Torkelson just absolutely nailed down two free-throws in the final minute to bring LF to within one.  Great ball pressure allowed Brooke Green to step into the passing lane with about 13 seconds to go and take off for a 1-on-1 lay-up.  Her runner fell of the front of the rim, but Torkelson snatched the rebound, kept the ball high and tossed it back up.  It hung on the front of the rim and bounced in to put the Scouts up 1 with 6 seconds.   Our lock-down defense prevented Grant from even getting off a final shot, and the girls celebrated their way off the court.  It was a great game!  The 7 – 3 Scouts will host Warren Friday, December 9, at 6:00.

Stats:  Manning – 3 points, 1 rebound; Torkelson – 8 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal; Farrell – 2 points, 3 rebounds; Wells – 5 points, 5 rebounds; Green – 6 points, 4 rebounds, 6 steals, 2 assists, 1 block; Arnson – 6 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block

12/06/11
Lake Forest 27 - Zion-Benton 50
The Scouts played much better tonight against Zion-Benton, unfortunately a horrendous 2nd quarter doomed us.  If we can take some positives from these past two games, it’s that we are learning to communicate and think like basketball players.  Our half-time adjustments made a big difference and provided us with better spacing and scoring opportunities.  We really limited our second half turnovers and slowed their offense down giving up only 15 points for the entire second half.  The now 6 – 3 Scouts play against Grant on Thursday night.

STATS:  Manning-- 6 rebounds; Torkelson – 12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steal; Wells -- 3 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block; Feldhaus --  1 charge; Green -- 7 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists, 1 block; Arnson – 5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steal, 1 block, 1 assist.

12/05/11
Lake Forest 25 vs Zion-Benton 54
The Scouts fell to the Zee-Bees of Zion Benton, taking their largest loss of the season.  LF's offense was stymied by the aggressive 2-3 zone and committed turnover after turnover (altogether there were 25 for the game), with a lot of them being converted into fast-break lay-ups on the other end.  Lake Forest played hard tonight, but we did not play smart.  Spacing was poor on offense and passing was worse. The Scouts also could not defend the ZB's excellent perimeter shooting or their aggressive drives to the basket.    We’ll look to redeem ourselves tomorrow night when we take on Zion-Benton again at their place in our second conference game of the season.  The sophomore Scouts are now 6 – 2.

STATS:  Manning--2 points, 4 rebounds; Torkelson – 2 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block; Wells -- 4 points, 7 rebounds; Feldhaus --  1 point, 2 rebounds; Green -- 6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists; Arnson – 10 points, 2 rebounds.

12/03/11
Lake Forest (6-1) 34 - Highland Park 29
The short-handed Scouts showed their pride today with an exciting 34 – 29 victory over a very active Highland Park team. LF's porous first-quarter defense allowed HP to jump out to a 13 – 3 lead only a minute into the second quarter.  The Scouts once again had a tough time scoring early, but this time the defense wasn’t setting the stage.

Lake Forest regrouped in the second half and, even though they had only one substitute, their defensive pressure increased tremendously.  Eventually the offense broke their zone down on the other end of the floor, and the Scouts outscored their opponents 12 – 4 in the 3rd quarter.  The team did some real nice things out there today, and even though they were only 1 – 6 from the free throw line and had only six players available, the girls knew they were the better team.  The Sophomore Scouts are now 6 – 1 on the season and look to continue our winning ways Monday, December 5, at Grant.

STATS:  Manning--7 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assists; Torkelson – 7 points, 17 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 block; Feldhaus --  4 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist; Green -- 14 points, 14 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists; 1 block; Arnson – 6 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block

12/01/11
Lake Forest (5-1) 32 - Mundelein 20

The Sophomore Scouts finally came out of the gate ready to play.  Kate Arnson helped get the team started by scoring the team's first 5 points of the game. The Scouts just wanted the ball more tonight and gave up only 2 offensive rebounds the entire game.  Combining the stellar team rebounding with 13 steals turned out to be too lethal a combination for Mundelein to compete with.

It was another great team effort.  Every girl does such a tremendous job--from keeping active and alert on the defensive end of the floor, to diving for loose balls, to wrestling away rebounds--these girls are putting it all out there for 28 minutes.  That’s where the game was won.  Brooke Green finally got going in the third quarter and threw in 8 of the team’s 10 points to give LF a healthy 26 – 13 fourth-quarter edge. The Scouts held the Mustangs off for the remaining 7 minutes--improving their record to 5 – 1.

Next up: at Highland Park on Saturday, December 3

STATS:  Manning--2 points, 2 rebounds,2 assists; Torkelson – 3 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block; Farrell – 4 points, 2 rebounds; Wells -- 4 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals; Green—12 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists; Arnson – 7 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals, 1 block

11/30/11
Game 1 – Grant Tournament:
Lake Forest 29 - Wauconda 21
The team put in another valiant effort tonight against a scrappy Wauconda team and came out with a 29 – 21 win to pull to 4 – 1 on the season.

The Scouts started off slow and needed to climb out of an early 6 – 0 hole and eventual 8 – 4 first-quarter deficit.  Good defense came to the rescue once again.  The girls never surrendered double-digit points in any quarter while waiting for the offense to finally get going.  It took until the 3rd quarter for that to happen.  A well-balanced scoring attack helped pace the Scouts.  Four players scored 6 points each and one other added 5 points; however, it was great rebounding-- combined with our ability to break Wauconda's 2-2-1 full court press--that gave the Scouts a real boost.  The team looks to continue their progress on Thursday, December 1, at Mundelein.

STATS: Manning--6 points, 2 assists, 2 steals; Torkelson--5 points, 14 rebounds, 2 blocks, 3 steals; Wells--6 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals; Green--6 points, 9 rebounds; 3 assists, 4 steals; Arnson--6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks

11/19/11
Lake Forest 30 - Regina 20                                                                 Game 3 of LF Tournament
Both teams entered the final game of the tournament at 1 – 1.  The winner of this game will get 5th place.  Regina started the game in a 1-2-2 zone and threw the Lake Forest offense off kilter for the entire first half.  But even when good shooting takes a night off, good defense doesn’t.  The Scouts also were able to disrupt Regina’s offense, sparked by tremendous half-court man-to-man ball-pressure defense exhibited by Megan Manning.  Even though the Scouts were held to only 9 points in the first half, they were down by only 2 starting the third quarter.

Brooke Green and Maddie Wells eventually found some holes in Regina’s defense, while continuing to  play lock-down defense at the other end of the floor.  Unsung hero Kallie Feldhaus quietly put together a stellar defensive effort as well.  The girls are starting to learn that they can trust their teammates, which is a crucial component to a successful team.   It was a great finish to the tournament.  The Scouts are now 3 – 1 overall.

Up next for Lake Forest  vs Wauconda (in game 1 of the Grant tournament) on Wednesday Nov. 30th at 5:30 pm.

STATS: Green--15 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals; Manning--6 points, 1 rebound,
Wells--6 points, 14 rebounds, 4 steals; Arnson--3 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.

11/19/11
Lake Forest Scouts 64 vs North Chicago 15                              Game two of LF Tournament

The Scouts redeemed themselves from last night’s loss by thwarting North Chicago by 49 points.  Lake Forest's ability to break NC's zone, combined with the lethal perimeter shooting of guards Brooke Green  and Megan Manning, gave the Scout's a huge advantage. Center Kate Arnson and forward Maddie Wells executed their high-low action very well inside and capitalized on second-chance point opportunities.

The intensity in this game was much better for the entire game--there were really no let-downs. The Scout's defense managed to keep the Lady Warhawks to only 5 field goals in 28 minutes of basketball.  Let’s hope the intensity can carry over to our final game of the tournament against the winner of Round Lake and Regina.

STATS: Green--20 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals; Manning--15 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist; Wells--13 points, 13 rebounds, 1 steal; Farrell--4 points, 4 rebounds; Arnson--12 points, 10 rebounds; 4 blocks

11/18/11
Lake Forest Scouts 14 -Vernon Hills Cougars 33

Hats off to the Vernon Hills Cougars, who played a tremendous game against the Scouts in the opening game of the Thanksgiving Tournament.  The Scouts could grab only four offensive rebounds, all in the second half.  Vernon Hills played well.  It was hard to imagine that this was their first game......they played that well.  The Scouts dug themselves an early 12-0 deficit, giving up some easy lay-ups during the opening stretch.

The girls picked up the pace in the second quarter and gave up only 4 points to bring LF to a 19-6 half-time deficit.  The Scouts struggled offensively the entire game and never really got into sync--scoring just 4 points in each of the final three quarters.  It was a tough game.

STATS: Green--8 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals; Manning--4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist; Arnson--2 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks; Farrell--2 rebounds; Wells--6 rebounds;

11/15/11
Lake Forest 31 - Regina 23

The Sophomore girls' basketball team came out of the gate a little slow opening night, but great defensive pressure that lasted through the third quarter helped put it nearly of reach only a few minutes into the fourth.

Trailing 5-4 after the first quarter, the Scout's defense, led by Captain Maddie Wells and Center Kate Arnson, surrendered only 10 points total by the end of the third quarter.  This gave the Scouts time for our offense to start clicking.  Freshman Brook Green scored 14 points while dishing out 6 assists.  Grace Torkelson (also a Freshman) snagged 11 rebounds while adding 6 points to help the cause.  The Scouts built a 22- 10 lead by the time the fourth quarter began and were able to hold on despite a late-game surge by the Panthers that cut the lead to 31- 23 by the end of the game.

Guard Megan Manning played lock-down defense on the other team's point guard for most of the whole game.  During a time-out, Megan mentioned how quick her girl was and asked her teammates to be ready to help.  Megan rarely needed that help, but when she did, our defensive rotations were immediate.  Forward Claire Farrell and guard Kallie Feldhaus also gave very important minutes throughout the course of the game. It was a great team effort!

STATS:
Manning--2 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists; Torkelson--6 points, 11 rebounds 2 assists; Wells--3 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist; Green--14 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists; Arnson--5 points, 9 rebounds; Fieldhaus--2 points, 2 rebounds; Williams--2 points
