Written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein
II, South Pacific takes place during the early stages of the Second
World War on the Pacific front. Set on an undeveloped, tropical island
formerly inhabited by French Colonists and native Polynesians, paradise
has now become a staging ground to assess the
enemy strategy and plan a way to turn the tide of a brutal
losing battleground.
Called to service for their country are soldiers, sailors, marines, and
nurses from Philadelphia to Little Rock, from Princeton to the farm,
all united in dedicating their lives to stopping the Japanese from the
domination of Asia, as an equally horrendous, unpredictable, and culture-threatening
war is being fought in Europe, Americans see a different world, different
cultures, and sides of their own psyches which they could never have
imagined. Many die and many return home victorious but forever changed
by what they have seen and what they have done.
Amidst the terror and horror are normal human beings who love, barter,
raise children, play, sing, and try to find a way to survive and to make
sense of their world. Set in a lush tropical paradise we are treated
wonderful songs including “Bali ha’i”, “Some
Enchanted Evening”, “Younger than Sprintime”, “I’m
gonna wash that man right outta my hair”, and “there aint
nothin’ like
a dame.”
The cast of South Pacific features Casey Donovan, Trevor Wellington,
Deenah Bassiouny, Hannah Wang, Carter Petray, and Alexander Zielinski.
Directors are Kelly MacBlane and Barbara Papp, David Miller is Technical
Advisor, Timothy Haskett is Vocal Director, Robert Bassill is Orchestra
Conductor, Sandy Ragsdale is Choreographer, and Rita Fossell and Dawn
Neal are Costumers, with Wendy Koch doing Hair and Makeup. Production
