Human Rights Club: Landmine Awareness Week will be begin Wednesday,
April 2! Lake Forest High School’s Human Rights Club is sponsoring a Landmine Awareness Week in recognition of the International Day to Ban Landmines, April 4. Beginning Wednesday, April 2, there will be activities during all periods in the library where students are invited to learn more about landmines and the international legislation controlling landmine use. On Thursday an Animal Planet DVD will be viewable in the library, which will focus on CHAMPS – an organization in Washington, D.C. -that trains and travels dogs for de-mining efforts across the world. Landmine Awareness Week will conclude Friday with a guest speaker talking during lunch periods five and six. The guest speaker, Alison Bock, is the president of the non-for-profit organization Landmines Blow!® She and her colleagues sponsor Project Safe Water, in which they raise money to build wells in mine-affected communities in Cambodia. The proceeds from the Human Rights Club fundraising will go to Landmines Blow!® in support of Project Safe Water, providing a safe water source to villages in landmine infected regions of the world. Please contact Claire Palutsis at Lake Forest High School for more information or to become involved in our landmine initiative. |
