The
yearbook club would like to address some questions that have
come up since the distribution of the 2008-2009 yearbook. Because
these changes are very different from what has been done in the
past, we felt it was necessary to explain further.
Beginning last
summer, Forest Trails started reviewing past LFHS yearbooks,
and noticed that there were some areas in the sports pages that
needed to be improved…one of them being
spring sports. In previous years, the
teams who played in the spring received a less than satisfactory
page showcasing their talents. Because our deadline for
the yearbook is in February, we were never able to capture photos
during the actual season. The spring teams got one page
that had no information about the season and the photos were
of players in sweats during pre-season and open gyms. We
didn’t think that this one page gave anyone a sense of
the quality that the spring teams have at LFHS. We wanted
to give them the credit they deserved, but in order to do that;
we needed to follow the same pattern as Prom. In addition,
most schools cover their spring sports this way – or eliminate
them from the yearbook.
Our fall and winter sports receive a
full spread (two full pages) with information about their season
and photos of them in action, and we felt the spring sports deserved
this same honor. This
year we tried very hard to feature players who were still at
LFHS, but because this decision was made this summer, after spring
sports were finished, we did have to feature players who had
already graduated. However, this spring, we made great
efforts to get photos of all the players who will be returning
next year so that the players highlighted on the spread are the
players still here at the school.
The other major change
with sports is the JV and Fresh/Soph sports. In the past,
these teams received a very small photo of the team and an even
smaller photo of a player in action. We
felt they deserved more than this, so we created their own section
which gave us the opportunity to make the team photos bigger
and the individual shots larger as well. We
understand this was confusing on where those pages were located,
so for next year, we will keep the JV and Fresh/Soph sections,
but we will put them after the varsity spreads in the season
that the sport was played.
We thank all of
you for your positive comments and suggestions and we encourage
all students who would like to help with next year’s book
to please see Mrs. Littel or Mrs. Christofylakis when we return
in the fall. Finally, we have looked into
printing a supplement for spring sports and spring activities
separate from the yearbook, but as of now, this is not an option
for LFHS. Next year's book will cover the 2009 spring teams.
We understand this is a change, but long term this allows the
teams to get equal coverage and for us to use actual pictures
of the sports in action. Sincerely,
