John Luther said, “Good character is to be praised more than outstanding talent. Most talents are to some extent a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece by thought, choice, courage and determination.”
The Malin family will be offering an annual “Good Character” scholarship to be given to a deserving LFHS senior who will use the financial award for continuing his or her education in college or other post-secondary vocational program.
The bulk of each monetary award will be comprised of the profits of Mrs. Maria Malin’s book, “When You Just Can’t Say Good-bye, Don’t - A Mother’s Personal Journey After Losing a Child,” written in honor of her son, Steven, and her family’s quest to find true healing after the loss of their son and brother. Steven Malin, Jr. was killed by a freight train at the West Lake Forest train station on April 19, 2003 at the age of eleven.
Although the scholarship amounts will vary each year based on the book’s sales, the 2011 award will be a $1,250 second prize and $2,500 first prize, totaling $3,750 to two graduating seniors who best exemplify what it means to have good character, how their lives have shown that commitment, and how they will specifically apply those principles to their adult life.
A 500 word essay on the above will be judged by the Malin family, and the first and second place scholarships will be awarded by the Malin family on Senior Awards night. Applicants will be assigned a number and judged anonymously and must not indicate any past association or friendship to Steven Malin, Jr. or his family members in their essay.
Applicants are to submit the following:
♣ 500 word typed essay as outlined above to explain why you feel you deserve this scholarship award
♣ Please include your transcript although there is no minimum GPA to qualify
The CRC will ensure that each applicant’s name is omitted from
the essay and transcript before review by the Malin family.
Completed applications must be submitted to the CRC by Friday, March 16, 2012.
